Philip Steenkamp began his five-year term as president and vice-chancellor of Royal Roads University in January 2019. He previously held the role of vice-president, external relations, at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, and has held senior leadership positions in multiple provincial ministries over a 17-year career in the public service. Steenkamp is chair of the Conversation Canada.
