In 1999, Martine Reid established the Bill Reid Foundation in honour of Bill Reid, and the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art – the first public gallery dedicated to contemporary Indigenous art from the northwest coast in Vancouver. Reid is the recipient of the Ordre National du Mérite, France’s second-highest honour for French citizens.

FUN FACT: I learned spoken English while learning Kwak’wala from a Kwakwaka’wakw elder. Bill Reid later said that I spoke English with a French-Kwak’wala accent.
