Dorothy Grant, OC, has transformed Canadian Indigenous fashion since 1986. She helped change what success looks like and has tread her own path in a very difficult and changing landscape. She became the inaugural Bill Reid fellow at Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Bill Reid Centre in 2021, and holds an honorary doctorate in fine arts from SFU.
HOMETOWN: Hydaburg, Alaska.
GREATEST SUCCESS: Dressing pop stars and actors for the red carpet, such as P. Diddy and Duane Howard of the movie The Revenant.
GOAL FOR 2022: A retrospective of my work in writing. To photograph on native models 40 pieces in Haida Gwaii sacred sites.
BEST ADVICE: A golden reputation is something you earn: handle it well, respect it. It will be your legacy.
