James Speakman has worked to establish and build business in British Columbia for over three decades. As managing partner, his leadership has grown Clark Wilson LLP from 160 to over 290 individuals and strengthened the firm’s culture. As a result, Clark Wilson has been recognized as one of Canada’s best workplaces by Great Place to Work Institute Canada.

GOAL FOR 2022: To continue and consolidate our growth of the past five years, developing a workable flexible/remote work environment while maintaining our culture.
FUN FACT: I spent a “gap” year in university at music school, thinking I should become a working, commercial musician.
BUCKET LIST: To learn to kite surf.

BIGGEST LESSON: “The most significant lesson I’ve learned in both business and life is to ‘follow the money.’ Knowing how a deal is being funded and who is behind it reveals a lot.” BEST HABIT: “Management by walking around. Getting out of my office to speak with our team energizes me and always results in new ideas. I try to do so every day.” LAST MEAL: “Barbecue cheeseburger with potato salad and an ice-cold ale.”
